Important Information for Parents of Harrand Creek Students

Building-Based Student Support Team (BBSST)

The Alabama State Dept. of Education requires all schools in the state of Alabama to have a Building-Based Student Support Team. The following information regarding Harrand Creek’s BBSST is being offered to help you understand its purpose and function.

What is BBSST?

You may have heard your child’s teacher mention something called the BBSST and have wondered what it means. The BBSST (Building-Based Student Support Team) is a school-based, problem-solving group. Team members consist of the principal, the school counselor, the reading coach, the reading teacher, and at least two regular classroom teachers. The special education resource teacher serves as a consultant. Any teacher who refers a child to the BBSST automatically becomes a member of the team.

What does the BBSST do?
The BBSST meets once a month to review referrals from classroom teachers. Teachers refer students who are struggling academically or who have ongoing behavior problems that impede their learning. The team identifies the strengths and needs of the students and recommends alternative strategies and techniques for the teachers to try in the classroom in an attempt to help these students be more successful. The team may also recommend academic or behavioral screening, or a referral for additional evaluation.

How will I know if my child has been referred to the BBSST?
Your child’s teacher will notify you. If the teacher has concerns about your child’s progress he/she will set up a conference with you to discuss the problems. At this time the teacher may discuss a BBSST referral with you. The teacher may also notify you with a phone call or note. After the team has met and discussed your child’s referral you will receive a notice detailing the team’s recommendations.

Who should I contact if I have questions?
You should contact your child’s teacher, the school counselor (Mrs. Reed), or the principal (Mr. Retherford). The school number is 347-5383.
